BIENVENIDOS A MI CURSO!
COURSE: SPANISH 1
SCHOOL YEAR: 2009-2010
TEACHER: DR. RICHARD DE GOURVILLE

COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to introduce students to Spanish language, history and culture. As is typical of most high schools within the City of Philadelphia, PE & T Charter High School offers Spanish language to students in the Sophmore (Spanish 1) and Junior years (Spanish 2). As such, it is a condensed course that attempts to teach the fundamentals of the Spanish language (i.e. reading, writing, listening, speaking, and culture) in an integrated manner. However, in spite of the short duration of the course, expectations from both students as well as parents that the former will become "fluent" or at least "proficient" in the language are often exaggerated. Even with longer exposure to the language, many students will attain at best, a beginner level proficiency as measured by the standards of the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Language. At PE & T Charter High School, we attempt to bridge these deficits through the creative use of technology and the Internet.

READING: While students are taught the Spanish phonetic system and encouraged to pronounce words, this course does not teach "fluency" i.e. the ability to decode words. Instead, the focus is on comprehension skill development.
WRITING: This skill is usually integrated with vocabulary and themes dealt with during the course of a specific lesson on grammar and mechanics. Students are expected to practice good writing technique through a guided process that utilizes writing models that elicit grammar and vocabulary previously learned.
LISTENING: Students will be introduced to simple passages or dialogues that contain grammatical, conversational or vocabulary items aligned to specific lessons.
CONVERSATION: Students will be introduced to diverse conversational structures that will enable them to comfortably provide information about themselves, their family, their school life, and their surrounding community.
CULTURE: The Hispanic cultures of Spain, the Caribbean and Latin America will be featured in this course with specific emphasis on Puerto Rico, Domninican Republic and Cuba. Students will read and research on Hispanic cultures that predominate in the cultural/ethnic make-up of the United States.
